It can take as little as a single facial feature to make a character memorable. Many fans can rattle off a list of their favorite anime eyes, but for some characters, the point of interest lies a little further north. Some characters have epic eyebrows for no reasons, while actually have backstories that explain these unusual features. Either way, these mighty brows separate their owners from everyone else. Here are some of the most epic eyebrows in anime.

7 Tomio Ookawa

Shiki’s Tomio Ookawa is a gigantic, intimidating man, looming over everyone he meets. His eyebrows and beard share the same wavy look, rising like flames from his face. His facial expression varies from stern to furious, which only accentuates his wild appearance. Tomio must spend as much time on his eyebrows as other characters do on their high-maintenance hair.

Though he is the strongest villager in the anime and isn’t shy about using his impressive strength, Tomio is often played as the show’s comic relief, something that his laughably wavy eyebrows are great for. He’s also an incredible bully at times, but even in the show’s darkest moments it’s hard not to get a chuckle out of Tomio’s radical eyebrows.

6 Jinbe

Joining the crew in the Wano Country Arc, Knight of the Sea Jinbe is the helmsman of the Straw Hat Pirates in One Piece. How extraordinary does a facial feature have to be to draw attention on an anthropomorphic whale shark pirate? As extraordinary as Jinbe’s eyebrows, apparently.

Modeled after the oni, Jinbe’s eyebrows are even more eye-catching than his angular bottom lip and bulb-like nose. It’s hard to explain exactly what’s going on with these eyebrows, but anyone who takes even a passing glance at Jinbe will have a hard time forgetting them. Jinbe has blue skin, gills, and the body of a sumo wrestler, and yet its these curly, stylized brows that he may be best remembered for.

5 Krillin

There’s a lot to notice when looking at Krillin, from his diminutive size and lack of a nose to his bald head and the six perfectly symmetrical moxibustion burn dots above his eyes. Yet somehow the most commanding thing about his appearance is still his eyebrows.

Krillin’s swooping black eyebrows look like a raven in midflight. One would think that a character who had mastered the Destructo Disc might have spared a moment to get his brows in order, but that’s not the case with Krillin. He’s one of the most iconic Z Fighters, even if he isn’t the strongest amongst them, thanks to his appearance, and that’s saying something given that he shares the team with aliens like Piccolo.

4 England

Most material depicting World War I and II is dramatic and often tough to watch given the hard realities of war. Hetalia Axis Powers takes a decidedly different approach, playing loosely with history with a cast of characters who are the personifications of entire nations. Given that their personality traits basically boil down to a hodgepodge of national stereotypes, these characters are eccentric by design.

Arthur Kirkland represents England in Hetalia Axis Powers, and any character who has the responsibility of acting as the stand-in for an entire country needs to stand out a little. With multiple black lines of varying lengths stacked on top of one another, England’s bushy eyebrows are often compared to whiskers or scratch marks.

3 Sanji

One Piece has no shortage of eccentric character designs, but the cook of the Straw Hat Pirates may win when it comes to eyebrows, beating out even the likes of Jinbe and his Fish-Man Karate. Sanji’s eyebrows are so distinctive they’ve ever received their own canon within the show.

The inner end of his left eyebrow spirals, whereas the right eyebrow spirals at the outer end, curling in the opposite direction from those of his siblings. Not only do his eyebrows have an unnatural curl, they’re weirdly thin, too. Given that Sanji’s hair, mustache, and goatee are all notable in their own way, it seems every hair on the head of this famous pirate is determined to do its own thing.

2 Shigekuni Yamamoto-Genryusai

Each Captain of the Gotei 13 has a signature look, but Captain-Commander Shigekuni Yamamoto may be the most distinctive at all. Gray-bearded, wrinkled, and wearing the countless scars he has collected over the years, Yamamoto is the very picture of age and wisdom. He’s also one of the strongest characters in all Bleach.

His gray eyebrows frame his face, dipping down past his cheekbones and beyond his mouth. Unlike other characters whose have droopy eyebrows to symbolize their weakness and frailty, Yamamoto’s eyebrows are pointed and sharp, a hint at this incredible Bleach warrior is even in his old age.

1 Rock Lee

Rock Lee, like Might Guy before him, has perhaps the bushiest eyebrows in anime. They are slabs of blackness painted across his face, a pair of rectangular wedges that look all the more ridiculous when paired with his bowl-cut and distinct eyelashes. Seeing Rock Lee beside Naruto, Sakura, Sasuke, and the other characters really puts his eyebrows in perspective.

Rock Lee became a fan-favorite character early in Naruto’s run, and his signature bushy-browed look may be just as big a reason as his intense attitude and impressive combat skills. Krillin may be in close competition where bushy black eyebrows are concerned, but they make even more of a statement on Rock Lee.
