Players who are new to the game might end up getting lost at the beginning, as there are many things that they will have to keep track of. Things that might be obvious to a veteran player might be ground-breaking to a player new to Hidden Deep. With that in mind, here are a couple tips to know before diving into this game.

7 Watch Out For Gravity & Physics

As it turns out, natural death is one of the player’s worst enemies when it comes to Hidden Deep. The crewmates are soft and squishy just like regular humans; they cannot survive jumps that go particularly far down.

As in many platformer games, crewmates will die if they jump too far, hit an object too hard, and so on. Players need to navigate the world carefully, or risk losing one of their crewmates. Human beings are fragile — be gentle with them.

6 Keep An Eye On The Crew

Players only have a limited number of crewmates to use during Hidden Deep. There are no check-points within a mission, either; once all crewmates die, it’s game over, and the player will have to start again from the beginning. Players should make sure that they try to at least keep one crewmate alive, as it is possible to scrape through on their last leg.

During harder levels, it will be necessary to ensure that crewmates at least try to escape alive, and conserving crewmates will become especially important. Players will have to ensure that they stay alive as long as possible. Escape is easier together.

5 Friendly Fire Exists; Don’t Hit Crewmates

Plenty of horrifying creatures lurk in the deep, and weapons are essential for defense. Unfortunately, it is entirely possible for a player to shoot one of their weapons, only to accidentally hit one of their teammates and hurt or even outright kill them. It’s not something a player should have to deal with, and should be avoided at all costs.

Players should make sure that their path is clear before starting to attack any enemies. If just one crewmate goes down, the player might have to completely restart the level, due to the lack of checkpoints within the game. Be careful when handling weapons.

4 Send Scouts Into New Areas First

Scouts are among the most indispensable teammates while playing through Hidden Deep. While exploring a new area, it’s easy for a player to get lost or end up dying midway through due to unknown obstacles. The Scout will help negate this issue.

The Scout has a variety of tools at their disposal. These include the Grappling Hook, which can be used to swing across large gaps, and the Scan-Ball, which can help with navigating an unfamiliar area. Players should send scouts first before navigating a new area, to help minimize unnecessary loses.

3 Get Used To The Grappling Hook

As useful as the Grappling Hook is for helping the Scout get across large gaps, it also takes some getting used to in order to wield it properly — and without killing any crewmates. As mentioned above, humans are fragile, and using the Grappling Hook can be dangerous.

The main problem with the Grappling Hook is that if a player doesn’t use it right or clear a space, the Scout will smash into a wall, or fall from too high a place, and instantly die. Players should learn how to use the Grappling Hook first thing during their playthrough.

2 Engineers Will Clear Paths

While Scouts can be used to navigate areas and discover the layout of an area, an Engineer can clear a path that a player could not previously pass. Engineers can open up paths by working machinery that Scouts cannot, and therefore they clear the area out for more exploration.

Players should learn how to balance between using a Scout and using an Engineer. These are the two types of crewmates that a player will have to work with in the early game. Engineers are important, even if they can’t be in a sustained fight like a Scout can.

1 Learn How To Drive Vehicles

Vehicles in Hidden Deep are used for all sorts of things, such as transporting objects and moving Engineers around (as they are safe when operating a vehicle). They can only drive on flat ground, though a crane can carry them to higher or lower ground.

Players should learn how to operate a vehicle and get used to the controls. It’s worth noting that important pieces of equipment like Dump Trucks can be destroyed, so that’s something else a player should watch out for while getting the ropes of how vehicles work and drive.

Hidden Deep is available on Linux, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, and Mac.
